What should I major in?

School of Creative Media (SCM) offers three programs for student to major in. They are Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Science (BSC) and Bachelor of Arts and Science (BAS). Choosing the correct major is necessary for student to develop and equip themselves in order to seek an appropriate career after graduation. So what should I major in?

First of all, I will start from Bachelor of Arts and Science. This inter-disciplinary program requires students to investigate the relationship between arts and science through studying of multimedia with science-based knowledge and encourages students to create innovative works between artistic field and science field. However, I am not familiar with the science about biology, physic and chemistry because all the electives which I chose in secondary school were about arts, computing and applied technology. It may be super easy for me to fail the core courses if I study in BAS. For that reason, I am sure that BAS will not be my choice to major in.
The next one is Bachelor of Science. The word “science” in this program is quite different with BAS because it is mainly focus on computer science. Core courses of BSC introduce different types of programming language, computing and media technology. Graduates can gain a wide range of practical computing skills and programming knowledge. In my opinion, programming is quite funny because I love mathematics. However, because of the abundant content of this program, most of the BSC students will have a very tight weekly schedule and heavy workload.  According to the distribution of semester GPA in 2012, only 2.8% of BSC graduates got a GPA over 3.5. In BA and BAS, the percentage of graduates who had a GPA over 3.5 was 15% and 7.3%. Clearly, it showed that the content of BSC is more difficult than BA and BAS. I am worried that I cannot handle my studies well with such busy life style. Additionally, examination is needed for BSC students. That is the main reason why I am still hesitating to choose it or not.

Then how about Bachelor of Arts? Compare with BSC, BA is obviously talking more about arts. Actually this program is not just about arts but also involves critical theory and some basic programming. For me, studying on basic programming is enough and it is more enjoyable than being proficient in all types of programming language. In addition, this program contains less core courses and has no examination. It means I can enjoy the process of doing artistic projects instead of studying painfully for the examination. Also, less core courses lets me have more credit units to spend on the electives such as cinematography, animation and digital imaging. It provides more opportunities for students to learn and develop in a specific area based on their hobbies. Hence, BA seems to be a good choice for me to major in.

Move on to the concern of career prospect, most of the graduates from BSC can find a job with higher requirement on technical skills. Nevertheless, it does not mean that BA graduates cannot work with high technology. In the orientation talk, the professors of SCM claimed that the most significant choice which affects the future career is the electives. Basically, most of the graduates from SCM are also prepared to work in media industry no matter what is their major. Consequently, the major merely gives student some background knowledge in specific area. Therefore, it is not important for me to choose the major with too much career concern.

My Home – My Friend

In a lazy Sunday morning, I woke up at seven o’clock rarely. I opened the glass sliding door, walked to the balcony and felt the early morning with cool wind. The nice smell of flatfish soup from the wonton noodles restaurant occupied my home - a little dwelling unit on the second floor of an old tong lau in Central. The view through the balcony and windows from my home can be divided into three parts – a narrow street, buildings and a small corner of the sky. It always reminds me of the long distance between Central and “nature”.

As same as every holiday afternoon, I sat on my bed, turned on the computer and put on my headphone in order to keep my mind away from the multi-noise - the sound from the radio, the background music of Candy Crush from my mum’s cell phone, loud scream of the Taiwan variety show from my father’s computer and the annoying noise from the nearly daily roadworks. They just like monsters and scare me every day. However, I had no choice because I did not have my own room. “Luckily”, an escape chance for me was coming very soon because my family needed to move to a flat of public housing.

After having a deep “communication” with my computer, the dinner time was coming. The view outside the window was still bright because of the countless large shop signs with dazzling neon lights. As what I have do every night, I took out and opened the mahjong table in the middle of the living room. Then placing the old newspapers on it as placemats. When the kitchen became silent with a familiar smell of fired garlic, it meant the dinner was ready. In most of the dinnertime, I looked at the naive graffiti which drawn by my sister and me when we were primary school students on the wall behind my bed. Rainbows, butterflies and stars with messy lines and coloring made me remember my delighted childhood. Regrettably, it was the time to say good-bye to my lovely rainbows.

At the midnight, the cheer sound and disco music from Lan Kwai Fong became louder. I turned off the computer, took off my glasses and lay on bed. Naturally, I raised my right hand and pointed to the little black dots on the ceiling. One, two, three…trying to count the “shadows of stars”. The piles of specks created many natural but abstract patterns. This image made me enjoy every night before falling asleep. I closed my eyes and thought about my future. I did not know where I will be one year later. The merely thing that I understood was I needed to leave my home no matter I agreed or not. Therefore, see you and thank you, my “best friend”. It was my pleasure to be here with my dearest family in the past eighteen years.
