What should I major in?

School of Creative Media (SCM) offers three programs for student to major in. They are Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Science (BSC) and Bachelor of Arts and Science (BAS). Choosing the correct major is necessary for student to develop and equip themselves in order to seek an appropriate career after graduation. So what should I major in?

First of all, I will start from Bachelor of Arts and Science. This inter-disciplinary program requires students to investigate the relationship between arts and science through studying of multimedia with science-based knowledge and encourages students to create innovative works between artistic field and science field. However, I am not familiar with the science about biology, physic and chemistry because all the electives which I chose in secondary school were about arts, computing and applied technology. It may be super easy for me to fail the core courses if I study in BAS. For that reason, I am sure that BAS will not be my choice to major in.
The next one is Bachelor of Science. The word “science” in this program is quite different with BAS because it is mainly focus on computer science. Core courses of BSC introduce different types of programming language, computing and media technology. Graduates can gain a wide range of practical computing skills and programming knowledge. In my opinion, programming is quite funny because I love mathematics. However, because of the abundant content of this program, most of the BSC students will have a very tight weekly schedule and heavy workload.  According to the distribution of semester GPA in 2012, only 2.8% of BSC graduates got a GPA over 3.5. In BA and BAS, the percentage of graduates who had a GPA over 3.5 was 15% and 7.3%. Clearly, it showed that the content of BSC is more difficult than BA and BAS. I am worried that I cannot handle my studies well with such busy life style. Additionally, examination is needed for BSC students. That is the main reason why I am still hesitating to choose it or not.

Then how about Bachelor of Arts? Compare with BSC, BA is obviously talking more about arts. Actually this program is not just about arts but also involves critical theory and some basic programming. For me, studying on basic programming is enough and it is more enjoyable than being proficient in all types of programming language. In addition, this program contains less core courses and has no examination. It means I can enjoy the process of doing artistic projects instead of studying painfully for the examination. Also, less core courses lets me have more credit units to spend on the electives such as cinematography, animation and digital imaging. It provides more opportunities for students to learn and develop in a specific area based on their hobbies. Hence, BA seems to be a good choice for me to major in.

Move on to the concern of career prospect, most of the graduates from BSC can find a job with higher requirement on technical skills. Nevertheless, it does not mean that BA graduates cannot work with high technology. In the orientation talk, the professors of SCM claimed that the most significant choice which affects the future career is the electives. Basically, most of the graduates from SCM are also prepared to work in media industry no matter what is their major. Consequently, the major merely gives student some background knowledge in specific area. Therefore, it is not important for me to choose the major with too much career concern.
